Dymaia and our National Tradition

Dymaia are called the summer shows at Kato Achaia from 1992.

The ex-mayor and historian m. Karabelas at his proposal writes:

It is about time for the summer shows to be connected with the past of Kato Achaia and particularly with the Ancient Dymi.

In fact "Dymaia" was an institution at the ancient season from the 80th Olympic games, from 456 B.C. All the Achaia athletes and spectators while they were going towards Olympia every four years, they passed through Dymi first, where there were festivals in honour of Ivota who had been an Olympic winner at 756 B.C.

Let's see what Pafsanias writes:

At the country of Dymi there is the grave of the athlete Ivota who was the first athlete from Achaia who had won an Olympic race. So far no honour had been attributed by the Achaia people. That's why Ivotas himself cursed them not to win anymore.

After some time, the people learned why they couldn't win in the Olympics. They asked the oracle of Delfoi. So, when they awarded many honours to Ivota, Sostratos from Pellini won at the children games. The generally held view is that all the people from Achaia who are going to take part in the Olympics, they should offer honour to Ivota and if they win they should crown his statue at Olympia.

But it isn't correct that no one from Achaia had won between 700-400 B.C. Although this is what Pafsanias says we don't understand it. In fact, the people from Achaia, after the victory of Ivota were uninterested in the sports. That is how the fact that they didn't honour Ivota is explained.

From the 5th B.C. century when they started to develop in all the sections, they realized the value of sports. In order to compete with the rest of the Greeks worthily, they should raise the youth's interest.

So what they could do is to go back the ancestral inheritance and to pull up those ideal models in order to become the symbols for the youth. Such a symbol was the ancient Olympic winner Ivotas. So the honours to Ivota were the revival of the Olympic spirit.

As a result, we should respect "Dymaia" and have a total and collective attempt for the revival of this ancient tradition of our place. We also mustn't forget that the tradition of "Dymaia" stayed alive for all these years.

The old people have reported that the local funfair had been established from the Turkish domination. Many years ago it lasted 8 days. But from 1915 it was limited into 3 days from 14-16 of September. So "Dymaia" is a revival of the old traditions, which lasted long. These values should be maintained like the apple of our eye!
